Uploading a poorly-formatted video to YouTube leads to slow processing, degraded quality, and in some cases, broken playback. Getting your export settings right before uploading means faster processing and the best possible quality on YouTube's platform.
YouTube's Recommended Specs in 2025
- Format: MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio).
- Resolution: 1920×1080 (1080p) for standard HD; 3840×2160 for 4K.
- Frame rate: Match your source — 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, or 60fps.
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 for standard videos; 9:16 for Shorts.
- Maximum file size: 256GB or 12 hours, whichever is smaller.
- Bitrate: YouTube recommends 8Mbps for 1080p60; 16Mbps for 4K30.
Step 1 — Trim Your Video in REEL CUTTER
Before exporting, trim your video to remove the intro fluff, the outro overhang, and any sections that don't add value to viewers. Load your clip into REEL CUTTER, set your trim points, and prepare for export.
Step 2 — Add Your Channel Watermark (Optional)
YouTube has a native "end screen" and watermark feature built into its platform, but if you want your channel name or website URL baked into the video file itself, add it now in the Watermark panel. Position it in the bottom right at 30–40% opacity for an unobtrusive credit.
Step 3 — Export as MP4 at High Quality
In the Export panel, choose MP4 and High quality. This gives YouTube the cleanest possible source to re-encode from. YouTube will process your upload and serve VP9/AV1 streams to viewers — starting with a higher quality source always yields better final quality.
Step 4 — Upload to YouTube
Go to YouTube Studio, click Create → Upload Video, and select your exported file. Fill in your title, description, tags, thumbnail, and chapter markers while the video processes. YouTube typically takes a few minutes for 1080p and longer for 4K.
YouTube Shorts Specifics
For YouTube Shorts, your video must be under 60 seconds (as of 2025, up to 3 minutes for some creators) and in 9:16 vertical aspect ratio. Trim to under 60 seconds in REEL CUTTER and export as MP4. Add #Shorts to your title or description to help YouTube categorise it correctly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't upload in WebM directly to YouTube — it works, but MP4 processes faster.
- Don't upload at a lower resolution than your source — always start with the highest quality available.
- Avoid uploading videos that are already heavily compressed (multiple re-encodes) — each compression step adds artefacts.
- Don't use Low quality export if you're planning to upload to YouTube — the quality degradation compounds when YouTube re-encodes.
